What Are Air-Core Coils? Advantages, Disadvantages, and Applications

Self-supported coil windings – also known as air coils or air-core coils – are engineered such that no magnetic core material is required. The lack of a magnetic core material creates two unique properties:

  • The downside of air-core coils tends to be a low inductance rating combined with high magnetic leakage flux due to the coil’s hollow core.
  • The advantage of air coils is a linear magnetization characteristic. As a result, self-supporting coils tend to not exhibit magnetic saturation limits when compared to similar-performing cored-coil products.

Self-supporting coils are generally wound with a special adhesive-coated wire. This helps prevent short circuits from occurring. During manufacturing, the adhesive layer is liquified, which essentially bakes the coil into shape for a more reliable product. To achieve mechanical stability, the windings are then fixed on a non-magnetic core material. Depending on the application, the core material used may be plastic, composite, glass, ceramic, or various other non-magnetic materials.
